I have had several requests for a material list used in my classes. What I have shown is a general listing for still life and portrait classes. If any queries arise please contact me through the contact page on this website or by email. Please Note: I use Windsor and Newton Artists Quality oils.  If students wish to use other makes or quality of paint should consult the colour charts of each and compare the colours rather than the names of the paint to get a close match.

This is my basic palette to which I occasionally supplement with other colours depending on subject matter such as special drapery etc.

Brushes

Hog hair round.
I recommend Holbein series K or similar, (Neef 140 round is a cheaper alternative).
To start with approximately 10 will suffice in sizes as follows.
6x no.8, 2x no.10 and 2x no.4 but please bring what you have, if any.
Ultimately you will need a large number of brushes of various sizes.
One No 0 synthetic water colour brush. Not sable

Media

A small bottle of refined or purified linseed oil.

You will also need a dipper. I suggest a straight-sided tin dipper.

A small bottle of Windsor & Newton
retouching varnish.
(do not buy spray varnish)

Palette
The palette should be plywood and as large as can be comfortably held.
A paper pattern can be supplied if required. If buying a new palette do not use it until it has been adequately seasoned or varnished.
A well prepared palette should last for many years if looked after.
Painting Surface

Various sizes of canvas will be needed but to start 1 each of 16"x12" and 10"x8"will suffice. Canvas boards as available from Art Supply shops will do.
Do not buy stretched canvasses.

Easel
Easels are generally available at the studio.

Clean up
Palette knife No. 30 or similar

You will need to bring and paper towel or rag to clean your equipment.
